So you just started a new job at a cool marketing firm or you're gunning for a promotion. You need a quick win to get your boss’s attention and make a good impression. What do you do?

Here are 5 ways a marketing professional can impress their boss:

1. Conduct a Content Audit

Performing a content audit is an important part of any content marketing strategy. It involves taking an in-depth look at your company’s existing content and analyzing it for quality and effectiveness.

When performing a content audit, you’ll want to ask yourself the following questions:

  • What do we have? Determine what pieces of content your business has and how you are leveraging them.
  • What is it about? Make sure the content delivers what the headline is promising.
  • Is it accurate? Make sure the content is factually correct and backed up by reliable sources.
  • Is it relevant? Make sure there are no outdated links, pricing information, contact info, etc.
  • Does it support your company’s goals? All content should align itself with the overall goals and mission of the company. Make sure all content is working toward a common goal.
  • Are people using it? Use analytical tools to look at how much interaction your content is getting and think of ways to increase engagement.
  • What is missing? In addition to looking at what is there, look at what isn’t there as well. Identify gaps and weaknesses and think of ways to improve.

Performing a content audit as your first move when starting a new job is a great way to show initiative and impress your boss with your knowledge and drive to make improvements.

2. Create a Marketing Plan

Now that you have performed a content audit and know where the gaps are and what needs to be fixed, it’s time to go the extra mile and show your boss that you know how to fix these issues. Put together a brief marketing plan that outlines the following:

  • What your goals are,
  • Who your target personas are,
  • Ideas for future content,
  • The volume and types of content you want to produce,
  • How you plan to distribute and manage content.

Putting together a brief marketing plan will show your boss that you have the knowledge and cunning and to produce results and not just perform tasks.

3. Present Weekly or Monthly Reports

Assuming your boss was impressed by your marketing plan, you still need to prove it is effective. Track your performance on a weekly or monthly basis and put together brief reports you can present to your boss at regular intervals. These reports should include information on the amount of visits, conversions and leads your marketing plan has generated as well as any other relevant benchmarks.

Not only is this a good way to keep your boss in-the-loop without making them ask, it gives you a subtle way to brag about your achievements without actually having to brag.

4. Be Ahead of the Curve

A sure way to impress your boss is to know more about your job than they do. As a working professional, you should always be on top of industry trends and developments related to your specific role and educate your boss on these facts.

Take our video guy, Alex, for example. When he started at Bluleadz, we didn’t even have a video department. But he stayed on top of the news and gathered enough facts and statistics to convince our CEO that we needed a video department to keep up with the times. Needless to say, Eric, our CEO, was very impressed and gave Alex the green light to get our video marketing department up and running. Today, Bluleadz is recognized as an innovator in this area.

5. Collaborate With Other Departments

A business can only achieve true success when all parts are moving together toward a common goal. Every boss or CEO wants to see this.

What you can do to really impress your boss is to foster collaboration between departments. For example, if there is a special event coming up, or if another department recently had a big success, you could help publicize it and build trust within the organization. This will increase the likelihood of you getting help with your marketing endeavors (can say guest post?!) in the future and really making a good impression on your boss.

Impressing Your Boss

No matter where you work or what you do, your job is to make your boss’s life easier. For marketing professionals, this means improving your current strategy to produce better results in your given arena (content, social media, etc.). Just think: If you were the boss, what would you want to see?
