Blog | 7 Resources to Keep Up with Front-End Web Design

Written by Steven Kielbasa | 5/26/18 12:00 AM

Modern front-end web design/development is a fast-moving target. Anyone who's tried to keep up knows just how hard it can be. Below are some awesome resources to help you stay up to date.

1. CSS-Tricks

Most people in the front-end space should know this one. CSS-Tricks originally started with a pure focus on CSS, but has expended over the years to cover all things front-end (and occasionally back-end, too). It's updated pretty much daily with all kinds of helpful articles.

2. Web Design Weekly

This is a weekly curated list of neat and useful front-end tools and libraries from around the Web condensed into a single weekly email. Every email opens with a JavaScript knowledge bomb showcasing some lesser known, but powerful, feature of the language, followed by a list of all the things you may have missed throughout the week.

3. Smashing Magazine

Smashing Magazine is another blog with well-written articles on all things front-end. Topics range the gamut from how-to content to the importances of accessibility. They post a few times a week, so its not too hard to keep up with.

4. CSS Weekly

Inspired by the success of Web Design Weekly, CSS Weekly follows the same format. The difference is that this is hyper-focused on all things CSS. Every week, they publish a collection of articles, some inspiration and some tools.

5. Codepen

This one is a bit of an oddball. There's nothing here that really helps you keep up to date, but it's a place for front-end workers to show off what they're working on or interested in. Browsing through their featured or recent pens section, you'll start to spot trends as well as some awesome inspiration.

6. Syntax.fm

This is a weekly podcast by Wes Boss and Scott Tolinski that covers a wide array of topics in the front-end world. Their format is largely the pair of them taking turns talking up the topic of the week.

7. Shoptalk

This is another podcast, this time by Chris Coyier and Dave Rupert. They tackle all kinds of front-end topics. Often, they feature guests who are interviewed for half the show before helping Chris and Dave answer user-submitted questions.

These are far from the only resources to stay caught up, but they're some of my favorites. The emails in particular are a great, since they condense so much into one digestible email. Do you have a favorite resource? Let us know in the comments.
